Indian at forefront as GE develops aircraft engine with 20% more efficiency: Official
Indian engineers at GE’s largest R&D facility in Bengaluru are at the forefront of a global effort to design an aircraft engine that could reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent. The project, Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE), is a joint effort between GE Aviation and the French firm Safran and includes engineers from the US, Poland, Mexico, Italy, Germany and Turkiye. D Uma Maheshwar, GE Aviation Site Chief Consulting Engineer, told PTI on the sidelines of the Y20 summit that Indian engineers are playing a significant role in the RISE project.
The Bangalore R&D facility is increasing its strength of engineers by 10 per cent each year and there are plans to add 200-300 more within the next 2-3 years. Maheshwar also said that 90 per cent of aircraft in India are powered by engines manufactured by GE. With the advanced engine set to be ready by 2035, the aircraft will look very different from the current aeroplanes.
The R&D facility is crucial to the success of the project as the new engine, once developed, will be very different from what the current aeroplanes appear to be in general. The engine will also boast of increased efficiency, which means that the aircraft will consume 20 per cent less fuel. GE’s R&D facility in Bengaluru is also responsible for powering 90% of all aircraft in India. The project, once completed, will be a major milestone for the aviation industry and will be a testament to the capabilities of the Indian engineers.
