DGCA urges to Improve Mental Health of Flight Crew & ATCOs


The DGCA has proposed several measures to ensure the mental well-being of flight crew and air traffic controllers, such as mental health assessments during medical assessments and a peer support program. A senior official from the civil aviation watchdog announced on Wednesday that a circular will be issued to airlines and AAI. This is to put in place the necessary arrangements to implement the recommendations.

The DGCA established an expert panel, worries concerning the mental wellness of flight crew and ATCOs, which come under AAI.

Therefore, the DGCA’s expert panel: experienced DGCA officers, air safety professionals, clinical aerospace medicine experts, and mental health specialists (psychologists). The three key areas in which action can be taken: are mental health assessment during medical assessments, implementation of a Peer Support Programme (PSP), and pre-employment psychological evaluation. This information was conveyed in a release by the DGCA.

The goal of the new initiative was to equip operators and stakeholders. It is in the mental health promotion field with the best practices and guidance possible. This, according to the official release, would enable them to take appropriate action and make informed decisions.

The DGCA has announced that the circular will be implemented from May 31st onward.
