Pakyong airport: Flight services resume at Sikkim’s
After a gap of almost two years, the Pakyong airport in Sikkim resumed its flight services on Monday, March 14th, 2023. This airport, located at a height of 4,500 feet above sea level, is one of the highest airports in the country and has been a crucial addition to the state’s transportation infrastructure.
According to officials, flight services at Sikkim’s Pakyong airport resumed on Tuesday when a Spicejet plane departed for Delhi. The airport, situated on a tabletop, had to suspend its services in October last year due to operational difficulties. The suspension of services not only caused inconvenience to the state’s residents but also had a negative impact on the tourism industry of Sikkim, as per the officials.
The resumption of flight services at Pakyong airport is a significant step toward the development of the state’s tourism industry. Sikkim’s scenic beauty, natural resources, and cultural heritage make it a popular tourist destination. The state is home to several monasteries, temples, and scenic spots, including the Kanchenjunga National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
According to officials, the Pakyong airport received a SpiceJet flight carrying 12 passengers, which later departed for Delhi with 43 passengers. Regular flight services are scheduled to commence on March 26, with a daily flight to Delhi being the initial offering. Prior to its suspension of operations, SpiceJet had been providing daily flights to Delhi and Kolkata from Pakyong.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) received a letter from Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang requesting the resumption of flight services. Pakyong airport, which is approximately 26.8 km away from the state capital of Gangtok, is the closest airport to the city. However, the busy Bagdogra airport in Siliguri, West Bengal, is about 123 km away from Gangtok.
