Vinay Dube, CEO of Akasa, prioritizes agility and efficiency over labels

Vinay Dube, the founder of Akasa Air, said that the airline prefers to be known for its nimbleness and efficiency rather than being pigeonholed into certain labels. Dube said that people have been using words like “warm, empathetic, and kind” to describe the onboard experience. The airline wants to be associated with those kinds of words.

Despite being a carrier with 19 aircraft in its fleet and operating 110 daily flights, Akasa Air does not want to be labeled as a startup or a budget carrier. The airline plans to begin international operations by the end of the year and has plans to place a “three-digit order” for aircraft.

In an interview with PTI, Dube emphasized that he does not like labels and believes they can constrain thinking. When asked how Akasa Air should be described, Dube responded by stating that he does not want to put labels on himself or the company.

He stated that the main focus of Akasa Air is to ensure customer and employee satisfaction, rather than achieving a particular market share or position in the aviation industry. He emphasized the importance of having a strong cost structure as a sustainable means to achieve this goal. Additionally, the CEO described the airline’s journey as exciting and expressed. It is for a desire for the company to be both nimble and efficient.

The CEO also mentioned that the label of being a startup can be limiting. As it may lead to the postponement of certain policies until the company is larger. To combat this, Akasa Air is currently developing employee policies, rather than waiting until later. He expressed his dislike for such labels, as they can restrict a company’s actions and be deemed unhealthy.

The airline presently has over 2,000 staff members, and it is anticipated to surpass 3,000 by March 2024.

According to him, “Over the last seven months, our in-flight service has received great feedback. We are delighted to hear people using terms such as warm, empathetic, and kind, which perfectly encapsulate the Akasa experience.”

In February, Akasa Air transported 361,000 passengers, accounting for 3% of the market share.
