Government Plans to Install Computed Tomography X-Ray Baggage Scanners at Airports

The civil aviation ministry is planning to introduce CTX X-Ray baggage scanners at airports, which would eliminate the need for passengers to remove electronic items from their hand baggage during security checks.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation, V K Singh, revealed that the techno-economic feasibility study for the installation of these scanners is currently underway. If successful, this move would increase efficiency at airports and streamline the security check process for travelers.

In a separate written response, Singh addressed questions about the disinvestment and debt of Air India. Prior to the strategic disinvestment transaction, the government provided Rs 61,130.96 crore in financial support to AI Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL) to repay past government borrowings, government-guaranteed SLB lease rentals, and Air India’s dues/liabilities.

The strategic investor for Air India took on Rs 15,300 crore of debt (85% of Rs 18,000 crore) and deposited the remaining Rs 2,700 crore (15% of Rs 18,000 crore) with the government.

The Tata Group took control of Air India, Air India Express, and a 50% stake in AISATS. The Government of India guaranteed NCDs amounting to Rs 21,985 crore in three phases for the previously transferred debt of Air India to AIAHL.

Interest on these NCDs is payable every six months, with an annual outflow of approximately Rs 1,107 crore for their payment. Therefore, after the NCDs’ tenure is complete, budgetary support will be provided for principal payment.

Traditional X-ray scanners, which may not provide as detailed images of baggage contents and can take longer to scan, are slower and less efficient than the scanners. This ensures that all potential threats are identified and dealt with appropriately, allowing passengers to move through security checkpoints more quickly and with less hassle.

The Government plans to implement CT X-ray baggage scanners at airports across the country in the coming months to enhance security and ensure the safety of all passengers.
