IndiGo Cabin Crew Member Molested by Drunk Swedish Passenger

According to reports, a 63-year-old Swedish national named Klas Erik Harald Jonas Westberg was arrested on Thursday. Westberg allegedly molested a cabin crew member aboard an IndiGo flight from Bangkok to Mumbai (6E-1052). The incident took place while Westberg was reportedly inebriated. The airline staff handed him over to the Mumbai police when the flight landed on Thursday. He was subsequently released on bail of Rs 20,000 by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Friday.

As per the complaint filed by IndiGo Airlines, Westberg began to misbehave with the cabin crew during meal service and continued to do so until the flight landed. At one point, the 24-year-old crew member had to read out a red warning card to him. After the flight landed, the accused was arrested and produced in the Andheri court on Friday. The Sahar police used the accounts of three witnesses to file a four-page charge sheet.

The cabin crew member described the incident in her complaint, stating that Westberg began causing trouble when she informed him that there was no seafood on board. She served him chicken and asked for his ATM card to process payment through the POS machine. However, when she handed back the card reader, Westberg allegedly held her hand. When she asked him to enter the card PIN, he molested her in front of other passengers. She shouted for help, and he returned to his seat.

A cabin crew member named Westberg was accused by the police of arguing and mouthing abuses at another crew member during a flight. He kept using foul language throughout the journey and eventually became an “unruly passenger” when the victim read out the red warning card.

Furthermore, Westberg assaulted a passenger who confronted him. When the flight landed, he was handed over to the police by IndiGo security officers and CISF officials. In the last three months, Westberg is the eighth unruly flyer arrested. In all of 2022, the police arrested six. This is also the fifth case of molestation onboard reported between 2017 and 2023.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)

Two IndiGo flyers who were allegedly drunk and misbehaved with the crew were booked by the Sahar Police recently. Due to the rising incidents of unruly passengers on flights, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has given detailed guidelines to the aviation regulator.

These guidelines include preventing highly intoxicated travelers from boarding the aircraft, limiting alcohol intake, installing CCTV cameras, and sensitizing staff about sexual harassment. In a letter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the DCW noted disruptive and unruly passengers on flights. The issues have become increasingly common in recent months, causing unpleasant and traumatizing situations for other passengers.
