Mangaluru International Airport Passenger Traffic Soars with 76% Growth

According to a press release from the airport, Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) saw a significant increase in passenger traffic during the 2022-23 financial year, handling a total of 1,794,054 passengers. This represents a growth of 76 percent compared to the previous fiscal year when the airport handled 1,016,559 passengers. Out of the total number of passengers in FY 22-23, 12.08 lakh were domestic travelers, while the remaining 5.86 lacks were international travelers, mainly headed to destinations in West Asia.

In addition to the growth in passenger traffic, MIA also experienced a 42 percent increase in air traffic movements during the 2022-23 financial year. The airport handled a total of 14,475 movements, including 10,060 domestic movements, 4,150 international movements, and 265 general aviation or chartered flight movements. By comparison, during the previous fiscal year, MIA handled 10,212 movements, including 7,792 domestic movements, 2,122 international movements, and the remaining GA movements.

In March 2023, the airport experienced a 7% rise in passenger traffic when compared to February. The total number of passengers was 143,788, including 98,191 domestic travelers, which is an increase from February’s 134,583 passengers. Additionally, the airport witnessed a 7% increase in ATMs in March compared to February.

To meet the high demand for routes such as Mumbai and Bengaluru domestically and established routes internationally, the airport has collaborated with both market-leading airlines and new entrants. Negotiations are ongoing with airlines to operate on domestic sectors that were previously unoperated, either through direct or connecting flights, to provide travelers with more options.

The statement mentioned that discussions are underway with airlines to offer more flights on previously unoperated domestic routes. The aim of these talks is to add more travel alternatives for passengers.
