Aviation Secretary announces Delhi Airport’s new terminal and fourth runway will be operational in September

Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal announced on Thursday that Delhi Airport‘s fourth runway and the new terminal will be operational by September. With the addition of the new infrastructure, the Indira Gandhi International Airport will be the only airport in India with four runways. During the EU-India Aviation Summit, which began on Thursday in Delhi, someone made the announcement.

During the summit, Bansal emphasized the growth of the Indian aviation sector and the need for improved infrastructure and connectivity. He stated that the country is focused on innovation to keep up with the industry’s rapid growth. With the addition of the new terminal and runway, the Delhi airport will be able to better serve its passengers and accommodate the increasing demand for air travel. The aviation sector’s expansion is a promising sign for the country’s economy and its future.

A knowledgeable official reported that the project’s fourth runway will measure approximately 4,400 meters in length and 75 meters in width. It is slightly smaller in size than the third runway, also known as 29/11.

“We anticipate that the fourth runway will alleviate the stress of an expected increase in flight operations,” said the official. The new runway will significantly decrease the waiting period for flights to land and take off.”

The expansion of the Delhi airport, which includes the construction of a fourth runway, is part of Phase III-A of the airport’s expansion plan. The original target for completion of the plan was the middle to the end of 2022.

In 2019, DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited), a joint venture mainly owned by the GMR Group, announced a Rs 9,800 crore investment for upgrading the existing Terminal 1, constructing a fourth runway, and undertaking other development projects to expand the airport’s capacity from 66 million to 100 million passengers annually.

The coronavirus pandemic also impacted the progress of constructing the runway, according to the official.

The upcoming EU-India Aviation Summit will center on air transport relations between the two entities, with a particular emphasis on the common challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. These include reviving air traffic in a post-Covid world, promoting sustainability, ensuring safety, and advancing the use of unmanned aircraft systems.

The summit will provide a platform for high-level policymakers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders from both the European Union and India to come together and exchange ideas.

According to a spokesperson, the summit is just the start of what promises to be a fruitful cooperation between India and the EU, with many areas of common interest ripe for further exploration.
