Pilot bodies criticize Air India’s unethical and draconian HR policies
The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots’ Guild (IPG) have jointly written to N. Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of the Tata Group, appealing for his intervention in the “draconian” and “untrustworthy” human resource (HR) policy of Air India Ltd. According to the letter, Tata Group is subjecting the pilots to unfair treatment and a hostile work environment, which goes against the fair and ethical practices that it prides itself on.

The unions have urged Chandrasekaran to rectify the situation as soon as possible, warning that the spiteful ideology of Air India’s HR department could potentially harm the airline’s growth prospects. They believe that the HR department is disregarding the laws and regulations that protect employees’ rights, and the pilots are suffering as a result.
The pilot unions expressed optimism and enthusiasm when the Tata Group acquired Air India, as the group was reputed for having the most people-oriented and comprehensive management style among the leading global organizations. However, the unions claim that Air India’s human resources department has been focusing on disassembling, restructuring, or even replacing the airline’s human resources.
The unions accused the company of implementing HR policies using a draconian approach, lacking trust, and aiming to limit employees’ autonomy. According to the unions, Air India’s human resources department’s response to their issues contradicts the public perception of the Tata Group as a compassionate employer known for their empathy towards their employees.
The joint letter states that the current HR leadership at Air India appears to have a significantly different philosophy from the late Mr. JRD Tata and the Chairman Emeritus, the respected Mr. Ratan Tata, who espoused esteemed and compassionate principles.
Air India is unilaterally changing some of the pilots’ service conditions under the guise of promotion, a move opposed by the unions.
