Air India Pilot Unions Vow to Take Extreme Measures to Protect Members from Termination

Air India’s pilot unions have vowed to take extreme measures to protect their members from termination by the Tata Group-owned airline’s management over a revised salary structure and service conditions. The two unions, Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) have warned the airline’s management that they are ready for a showdown and will go to “any extent” to protect their members.

On April 17, Air India introduced a revamped compensation structure for its pilots and cabin crew, but the ICPA and IPG rejected it. However, the two unions said to their members not to sign the document, as they claimed that the airline management was imposing the terms and conditions on them.

“It has been resolved by the IPG and ICPA that if any member/s of our union/s is/are terminated by the management for not signing the revised terms and conditions, the ICPA and IPG have pledged in unison to go to any extent to protect member/s till they are reinstated,” a joint ICPA-IPG resolution stated.

The unions also criticized Air India’s move to promote senior pilots with over 4 years of experience to the management cadre, calling it an attempt to kill the unions at the airline.

A query sent to Air India did not elicit a response.

The standoff between the unions and Air India’s management could lead to disruptions in the airline’s operations. The ICPA and IPG represent a significant number of pilots at the airline, and any action by the unions could have a severe impact on Air India’s flights.

The Tata Group acquired Air India from the Indian government in 2021 and also has been restructuring the airline to make it profitable. However, the process has faced resistance from employees, including pilots and ground staff, who have been protesting against job cuts and changes in work conditions.

The pilot unions’ threat of extreme measures is the latest in a series of disputes between Air India’s management and employees. It is unclear if the unions’ warning will prompt a response from the airline’s management and result in a resolution of the conflict.
