Indore’s Popular ‘Jeerawan’ Now Prohibited as Hand Baggage on Flights

On Monday, aviation authorities added ‘jeerawan’ to the list of items prohibited in hand baggage on flights. Jeerawan is a spice that is often sprinkled on poha, salads, and other foods, and it contains red chilies and several other ingredients.

The decision has evoked mixed responses from air passengers at Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport, with some people considering it absurd. According to a senior airport official who spoke to PTI, the authority has prohibited jeerawan in hand baggage. This is as per safety norms laid down by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

At the airport, there is a showcase that informs people about prohibited items, which contains a packet of jeerawan along with a pistol, knife, scissors, hammer, and screwdriver. Jeerawan is a famous spice in Indore, but its inclusion on the list of prohibited items highlights the importance of safety and security regulations for air travel.

Sameer Sharma, an entrepreneur from Indore and a frequent air traveler, expressed his shock at finding a packet of masala in the showcase at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport. He stated that categorizing jeerawan, a spice blend made of cumin, coriander, fennel, clove, cinnamon, red chili, asafoetida, turmeric, salt, and dried mango, among others, with hot spices like red chilies is absurd.

Jeerawan, apart from being a taste enhancer, has additional benefits such as improving digestion and keeping the body warm during winter.
