India commits to global climate action in civil aviation from 2027

India has announced its plans to join the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) from 2027. The Parliament’s Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced at a meeting held in New Delhi on May 2nd, 2023. Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia chaired the meeting.

The ICAO has been focusing on reducing carbon emissions from international civil aviation, and to achieve this, it has adopted several key aspirational goals. These goals include a two percent annual fuel efficiency improvement through 2050, carbon-neutral growth, and net zero by 2050. CORSIA and LTAG have clubbed these goals.

Individual airlines will bear the financial implications of offsetting depending upon their international operations as the CORSIA program implements in three phases. CORSIA is applicable only to flights originating from one country to another.

Explaining the rationale behind joining the ICAO’s climate action measures from 2027, the Indian Ministry said, “This will enable airlines of developing countries like India to get time to grow more so that they do not face any adverse financial consequences due to CORSIA.” Also, India needs time to expand its aviation industry and ensure that its airlines are financially equipped to bear the cost of offsetting, as it is a developing country.

By joining CORSIA and LTAG, India has joined the League of countries that are actively working towards reducing carbon emissions from aviation. This is a significant step in India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and its efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change.

India is the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the United States. It is also essential for India to take concrete steps to reduce its carbon emissions to meet its climate goals and contribute towards the global effort to fight climate change.

Furthermore, India has already taken several initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, such as the introduction of electric vehicles, the use of renewable energy sources, and the adoption of green building codes. Joining CORSIA and LTAG is another step in the right direction.

In conclusion, India’s decision to join the ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation and Long-Term Aspirational Goals is a positive step towards reducing carbon emissions from aviation and mitigating the impact of climate change. By joining this global effort, India also has shown its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to the global effort to fight climate change.
