Led by Harsha Raghavan, former head of Fairfax India, and Manoj Chacko, former executive vice president of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, Fly91 aims to commence operations in the October-December quarter. The airline’s primary base will be the newly built Goa airport by GMR, marking the first time the coastal state will house an airline headquarters.

Having obtained the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Civil Aviation earlier this year, Fly91 is currently working towards acquiring an Air Operator’s Permit (AOP) from the DGCA.

The parent company of the airline, Just Udo Aviation Private Limited, established by Raghavan and Chacko, has successfully raised capital of Rs 200 crore, as reported by ET.

Fly 91 in the aviation market

Fly91 is entering India’s aviation market, which is currently the world’s third-largest. This move aligns with the country’s ambitious goal of becoming the leading global aviation market by the decade’s end. However, the industry has recently witnessed some setbacks, with airlines such as Go First facing insolvency. Go First, owned by the Wadia group, has filed for insolvency resolution, leaving its aircraft grounded and subject to potential repossession by lessors. This collapse marks India’s first major airline failure since Jet Airways declared bankruptcy in 2019. Additionally, Air India, a state-run airline, encountered financial difficulties due to its substantial debt and mounting losses, ultimately leading to its sale to the Tata Group.

SpiceJet, which successfully navigated a challenging period after undergoing a change in ownership about a decade ago, is now confronting a potential legal battle with its lender. Furthermore, certain lessors are seeking to deregister planes from SpiceJet. Amidst these circumstances, Fly91 intends to establish a fleet of ATR-72 aircraft with 76 seats. Initially, the airline plans to commence operations with three planes and gradually increase its fleet to six aircraft within the first year. In order to optimize fuel consumption and enhance profitability, Fly91 opts to avoid Airbus or Boeing aircraft.

Moreover, the airline aims to serve routes between different states, prioritizing under-served and unserved airports where fuel VAT rates are lower. Fly91’s mission remains focused on enabling the next 100 million Indians to experience air travel, particularly emphasizing regional towns across India.
