On Friday, the Ministry of Civil Aviation made an announcement, providing an update on the progress of the construction of the Ayodhya airport. They announced that they expect to finish the airport by September 2023.
According to the ministry, the new airport will be designed to accommodate A-320/B-737 type of Aircraft and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 350 crores (approximately).
The scope of the development work encompasses several key components. These include the extension of the existing runway from 1500m X 30m to 2200m x 45m, allowing for the operation of Code-C type of aircraft under IFR conditions. Additionally, there will be an Interim Terminal Building, an ATC Tower, a Fire Station, Car parking facilities, and a new Apron to accommodate the parking of three Code ‘C’ types of aircraft. The project also involves the construction of various associated city-side and airside infrastructure, as outlined by the ministry.
New Interim Terminal Building
The Ministry announced the inauguration of the new interim Terminal Building, covering an expansive area of 6250 square meters. The architects designed this state-of-the-art facility to handle up to 300 passengers efficiently during peak hours. Passengers can avail themselves of a range of amenities, including eight check-in counters, with the Departure Hall featuring one conveyor belt and the Arrival Hall equipped with two. Moreover, the Terminal offers convenient car parking for up to seventy-five cars and two bus parking areas. It is worth noting that the Airport ensures compliance with PRM (Passenger with Reduced Mobility) standards.
In addition, the Ministry highlighted the Terminal Building’s commitment to sustainability. The facility incorporates a variety of eco-friendly features, such as a Double Insulated Roofing System and the provision of Canopies to conserve energy. The Terminal utilizes LED Lighting, Low Heat Gain Double Glazing Units, and implements Rainwater Harvesting to replenish the groundwater table. Landscaping, including fountains, adds to the aesthetic appeal while supporting environmental conservation. Other environmentally conscious measures include HVAC systems, a Water Treatment Plant, a Sewage Treatment Plant, and the use of recycled water for landscaping purposes. Furthermore, the Terminal boasts a solar power plant with a capacity of 250 KWP, meeting the esteemed GRIHA-V ratings. The design of the Terminal Building seamlessly incorporates the rich culture and heritage of Ayodhya, the captivating state of Uttar Pradesh, thereby creating a captivating sense of place for all visitors.
Architectural Facade of the Terminal Building
Notably, the architectural facade of the terminal building draws inspiration from the iconic temple design of the forthcoming Ram temple in Ayodhya. This distinct feature is showcased both on the city side and the Airside of the Terminal, offering visitors a glimpse of the region’s revered cultural heritage.
The proposed terminal building captures the essence of the Grand Ram Mandir, creating a spiritual atmosphere for its visitors. The architectural design of the Terminal features majestic Shikhars of different heights, adding a touch of grandeur to the structure. Complementing these varying shikhara, the Terminal will also showcase ornamental columns, enhancing the overall beauty of the building.
To create a captivating experience for passengers and visitors, the interior of the New Terminal Building will feature local art, paintings, and murals that depict the life cycle of Bhagwan Sri Ram. The decorative colonnade within the terminal will further contribute to this immersive ambiance.
Expressing his perspective on the ongoing development work at the airport, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, emphasized the visionary approach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji in driving progress in India’s infrastructure. The Ayodhya Airport exemplifies this commitment by providing a modern facility that not only improves air connectivity but also promotes tourism in the sacred city of Ayodhya. Guided by PM Modi’s leadership, this project aims to bolster regional development while honoring the profound cultural heritage associated with Lord Ram. The airport is poised to pave the way for Ayodhya’s growth and prosperity.
