AAI and SITA Collaborate to Bring Cloud-Based Innovations to 43 Airports for Seamless Passenger and Bag Processing

Officials have announced that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has partnered with SITA, a leading global provider of airlines IT services solutions, to introduce cloud-based technologies for passenger and baggage processing in 43 airports nationwide. This collaboration aims to enhance more than 2,700 passenger touchpoints, enabling the implementation of innovative solutions that cater to the expectations of modern travelers.

Initially, the implementation of the new technologies will take place in the 43 selected airports, with the potential to scale up to an additional 40 airports within the next seven years. This expansion plan is expected to accommodate the processing of over 500 million passengers during this period.

AAI and SITA

Sumesh Patel, the President of SITA’s Asia Pacific division, stated during a press conference that these solutions will empower passengers with greater control over their journey. They will experience a seamless and efficient check-in, bag drop, and collection process through various assisted and self-service mechanisms. Furthermore, the airports will enjoy the benefits of reduced infrastructure requirements and improved operational efficiency. Airlines, on the other hand, will witness a decrease in service charges and have the opportunity to leverage an agile technology platform to create personalized and exceptional passenger experiences.

Cloud-first Approach

With the adoption of cloud solutions, airports gain enhanced agility and flexibility to efficiently scale their operations as passenger numbers continue to rise. By adopting a cloud-first approach, they not only improve security measures but also provide airlines with a platform to host innovative technologies and move away from native applications. Through centralized cloud hosting of all servers, airports can reduce on-premise infrastructure costs and achieve centralized control, enabling proactive monitoring and management of services.

Patel emphasized that the implementation of new cloud technology will enable Indian airports to transition towards common-use passenger experiences. This means multiple airlines can leverage the same infrastructure, including check-in counters, self-service kiosks, and boarding gates, streamlining processes and enhancing convenience for travelers.

India is expected to witness a significant increase in the number of airports, from the current 148 to 220 by 2025. This expansion will effectively connect nearly 50 cities in India with populations exceeding one million people, creating substantial long-term economic value. Improved connectivity through air travel and transport will play a crucial role in unlocking the full potential of India’s economic growth.

Patel emphasized the crucial role of efficient and smooth operations, as well as a seamless passenger experience, in maximizing the potential of India’s air transport industry.

As part of the agreement, SITA will implement its advanced solutions, such as SITA Flex, Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS), SITA Common Use Self Service (CUSS), and SITA Bag Manager. These platforms, certified by IATA, offer airlines and ground handlers the advantages of common-use technologies, allowing them to scale their operations according to their specific needs.

Babbage Reconciliation

The implementation of a baggage reconciliation system holds immense importance in the industry’s recovery efforts, as it ensures a high level of accountability and minimizes the risk of baggage loss and security concerns. This project signifies a significant shift towards adopting cutting-edge technological platforms, improving operational efficiencies, and laying the foundation for the future adoption of biometric passenger processing.

Furthermore, the provision of real-time, dashboard-based information to governing agencies will enhance transparency and enable well-informed decision-making, fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

Patel announced that AAI officers stationed at both the airport and headquarters have been granted access to online real-time dashboards, marking a significant departure from the previous monthly service availability reports.

He stated that this new solution ensures that the officers have up-to-date information regarding the availability of systems across all airports at any given moment. As a result, by optimizing operational efficiency, we foster smoother operations and enhance overall performance.

SITA, a Geneva-based company, specializes in providing technology-driven solutions to airlines, airports, aircraft, and governments. Their primary goal is to ensure air travel is seamless, safe, and sustainable through the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.
