Port Blair Airport Unveils Magnificent New Terminal Worth Rs 710 Crore
Veer Savarkar Airport
On July 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the New Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair, through video conferencing, as announced by his office on Monday. Highlighting the government’s emphasis on enhancing connectivity infrastructure, the Prime Minister’s Office expressed that the newly established facility will significantly contribute to improving connectivity to the island.
Built at Rs 710 crore
The construction of the new integrated terminal building at Port Blair Airport has reached completion, with a total expenditure of approximately Rs 710 crore. Additionally, an Apron designed to accommodate two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft has been successfully constructed at a cost of Rs 80 Crore. As a result, the airport can now accommodate the simultaneous parking of up to 10 aircraft.
Inspired from nature
Drawing inspiration from nature, the airport terminal’s architectural design mimics the graceful curves of a seashell, evoking the beauty of the sea and islands. Spanning approximately 40,800 square meters, the newly constructed terminal boasts a capacity to accommodate approximately five million passengers each year.
Sustainable
The recently constructed airport terminal building incorporates various sustainable elements to promote environmental responsibility. Among its notable features is a Double Insulated Roofing System, effectively minimizing heat gain and optimizing energy efficiency. Additionally, strategically placed skylights allow ample natural sunlight to flood the interior during the daytime, reducing the need for artificial lighting. LED lighting fixtures further contribute to energy conservation efforts, while low heat gain glazing enhances thermal insulation within the building.
Features
The terminal building incorporates various environmentally friendly features to minimize its impact on the island’s ecosystem. These include an underground water tank that efficiently collects rainwater, also an on-site sewage treatment plant that treats all wastewater and repurposes it for landscaping, and a solar power plant with a capacity of 500 KW. These sustainable initiatives work together to ensure that the terminal building operates in harmony with the surrounding environment and reduces any potential negative effects.
Boosting Economy
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Port Blair serves as a gateway to the unspoiled islands of Andaman and Nicobar, making it a favored spot among tourists. The PMO stated, “The spacious New Integrated Terminal Building, recently constructed, will significantly increase air traffic and contribute to the growth of tourism in the area.” Furthermore, the development is anticipated to generate additional job prospects for the local community, thus bolstering the regional economy.
