These two Companies become Game-Changer after Signing a Lease Agreement for MRO
In a major development for the aerospace industry, GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ Limited (GHASL), a subsidiary of the GMR Group, has recently signed a Land Lease Agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines Services India Pvt. Ltd. This agreement grants Safran, the Paris-based aerospace company, the rights to lease land within the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park to build and operate an Engine Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility specifically for LEAP turbofan engines.
The Land Lease Agreement covers an expansive 23.5-acre land parcel situated within the SEZ area of GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park in Hyderabad. The MRO facility will construct approximately 36,500 square meters of built-up space on this land. Initially, the facility will have the capacity to service 100 engines per annum, with plans to gradually increase this number to around 300 engines by 2035. Moreover, a GMR official has confirmed that this collaboration expects to generate numerous employment opportunities in the state of Telangana.
The construction of the MRO facility is scheduled to commence in September 2023, and it is expected to be handed over to Safran in December 2024. Once operational, this facility in Hyderabad will become the largest MRO center within the Safran Aircraft Engines network. Operations are set to commence in 2025 and will provide employment to approximately 1,000 workers at its peak operational capacity.
Aman Kapoor, the CEO of GMR Airport Land Development, expressed his excitement regarding this significant development, stating, “We are excited to announce that Safran has chosen GMR Industrial Park after a thorough global assessment and has entered a lease agreement to set up one of the largest Engine MROs in the world.”
MRO Shop in Hyderabad
Nicolas Potier, Vice-President of Support & Services at Safran Aircraft Engines, congratulated GMR on selecting it as the location for their new MRO shop in Hyderabad. He emphasized that this MRO project represents a significant investment in Safran’s future in India. Potier further stated that the new facility would not only provide essential capacity to support the operations of their airline customers but also contribute to the expansion of the aeronautical ecosystem in the Hyderabad International Airport area.
It is noteworthy that Safran is already operating two industrial facilities within the SEZ area of GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park. Safran currently operates two industrial facilities within the SEZ area of GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park, engaging in cable harnessing and aircraft engine component manufacturing. Additionally, CFM, a joint venture of Safran with GE, is operating an Engine Maintenance training facility at the park. The addition of the new MRO facility further strengthens Safran’s presence in the region and highlights its commitment to the Indian aviation industry.
The Lease Agreement signed between GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ and Safran Aircraft Engines marks a significant milestone for the development of the aerospace industry in India. This collaboration will not only enhance the capabilities and services available within the country but also contribute to the growth of the aeronautical ecosystem in Hyderabad. With the construction of the MRO facility set to begin soon, the industry eagerly awaits the positive impact it will have on the region and the employment opportunities it will create.
