Full Body Scanners Set to be Deployed at Airports, BCAS Chief Reveals Plan

In a move aimed at bolstering aviation security measures, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has announced plans to deploy full-body scanners at airports across India in a phased manner. BCAS chief Zulfiquar Hasan stated on Monday that the process is expected to commence at major airports within a year. The decision comes in response to the growing demand for enhanced security screening procedures to ensure the safety of passengers and flight operations.

During a briefing in the national capital, Hasan emphasized that the use of full-body scanners has globally addressed privacy concerns, including in India. BCAS is confident that the deployment of these scanners will not infringe upon passengers’ privacy rights. Furthermore, the BCAS chief assured the public that passengers with health issues or other concerns will be provided with alternative screening options.

While BCAS has set a deadline for the full implementation of full body scanners by the end of the next year, Hasan acknowledged that the process may face challenges due to procurement cycle issues. Airport operators often acquire these scanners from a limited number of vendors worldwide, leading to potential delays in acquiring the required equipment.

Initially, the deployment will focus on major airports in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. These airports experience high passenger traffic and are critical hubs for domestic and international flights. By introducing full-body scanners at these strategic locations, BCAS aims to strengthen the overall security infrastructure of the aviation sector.

Last year, BCAS recommended the use of scanners based on computer tomography technology, which allows passengers to keep electronic devices inside their hand baggage during the scanning process. This upgrade from the current two-dimensional scanning technology will streamline security check-ins and expedite the boarding process for passengers.

India’s civil aviation market

India’s civil aviation market has been experiencing rapid growth, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors globally. In June, domestic air passenger traffic witnessed a substantial 18.78 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year, with around 1.25 crore passengers traveling within the country. This surge in air travel underscores the need for robust security measures to maintain the safety and integrity of air travel operations.

The announcement regarding the phased deployment of full body scanners came as part of the Aviation Security Culture Week celebration, which will be observed from July 31 to August 5. This week-long event aims to raise awareness about aviation security among stakeholders and the general public.

While the introduction of full body scanners marks a significant step forward in aviation security, BCAS continues to work closely with airport authorities, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the smooth and timely implementation of the new security measures. The authorities are confident that the deployment of full body scanners will not only enhance passenger safety but also contribute to a more efficient and seamless travel experience for all air travelers in the country.
