Adani Group Expands its Control Over Indian Airports
On Wednesday, Arun Bansal, the CEO of Adani Airports, announced that the company will be bidding for more airports across India as part of its goal to become the leading airport operator. Adani Airports had already won bids to operate six airports during the government’s previous round of airport privatization. Bansal confirmed that the company would participate in the bidding for the expected dozen more airports to be privatized in the next few years.
India is currently witnessing major airport developments, such as the Adani Group’s upcoming 2,866-acre airport in Navi Mumbai, which is expected to handle 90 million passengers by 2036. Additionally, Zurich Airport International AG is developing a new facility in the capital city of New Delhi. AG is with a final capacity of 70 million travelers. Greenfield airports are also expected to come up in the states of Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
Adani Airports has seen a substantial increase in domestic and international travelers, with all seven of its airports experiencing a rise of 92 percent in domestic travelers and 133 percent in international travelers. Furthermore, there has been a 58 percent increase in domestic flights and a 61 percent increase in international flights.
Adani Airports
According to Bansal, Adani Airports is optimistic about the aviation market in India and plans to expand its operations by building more airports. The company’s first phase involves the launch of the Navi Mumbai airport, which is scheduled to start operations by December 2024. In the first phase, the airport will have a capacity of 20 million passengers. Adani Airports already manages the Mumbai airport.
The Indian government has earmarked approximately $12 billion (Rs 980 billion) to develop airports over the next two years. With an increase in air travel demand, airlines have ordered hundreds of new planes, putting pressure on the existing infrastructure. India, the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, plans to increase its number of airports from 148 to 220 by 2025. Private companies will invest around $9 billion, while the state-run Airports Authority of India will fund the rest. The expansion involves creating new greenfield projects, building new terminals, and renovating existing facilities, including former military airfields.
Furthermore, the central government aims to construct new airports in seven locations across the country over the next five years. The new airports will be built in Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, Vijayapura, Hassan, and Shivamogga in Karnataka, Noida (Jewar) in Uttar Pradesh, Dholera and Hirasar in Gujarat, and Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh.
The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), also known as Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN). RCS is an infrastructure initiative that aims to develop 100 airports by 2024. This is part of the Centre’s plan to improve regional connectivity across India.
