Air India pilots face action after mid-air scare, Nepal requests intervention from Indian authorities
The Nepali aviation authority has taken action against Air India pilots for endangering a mid-air collision with a Nepal Airlines flight over Kathmandu. The pilots brought their plane down to 15,000 feet on Friday without receiving permission from the Air Traffic Controller (ATC), prompting Nepali authorities to ban them from flying in Nepali airspace.
The Air India plane had flown from New Delhi and was descending to land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. However, the pilots flew at an unauthorized altitude of 19,000 feet before abruptly dropping to 15,000 feet. This almost resulted in a collision with a Nepal Airlines plane traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu.
Someone forced the Nepal Airlines pilots to lower their altitude to 7,000 feet to avoid a collision. Following the incident, the Nepali aviation authority took swift action and imposed a ban on Air India pilots.

According to officials at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), a Nepal Airlines plane narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision with an Air India plane. The Air India plane suddenly descended to the same altitude as the Nepal Airlines plane, which was held at a height of 15,000 feet, causing the incident. Both planes’ alert systems automatically sounded, and the pilots were able to take evasive action.
In response to the incident, the CAAN has suspended the Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) involved in the traffic conflict at Tribhuvan International Airport from their active control positions until further notice. The authority has also sent a letter to Air India, requesting that they take action against the pilots responsible for the incident. The letter includes a message for India’s civil aviation authority to investigate and take appropriate action.
Jagannath Niraula, the spokesperson for the CAAN, confirmed that they had sent the letter to Air India and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. The CAAN is taking this incident seriously and is committed to ensuring the safety of all air travelers.
Also, he stated that they had written to examine the altercation between Air India and Nepal Airlines, take appropriate measures, and notify the relevant authorities.
Likewise, the airport officials in Kathmandu had requested clarification from the Air India pilots on the same day. The pilots had confessed to their error and expressed remorse.
Niruala reported that the CAAN had created an investigation team to investigate the matter.
