Akasa Air Places Order for Four Additional Boeing 737-8 Jets

In an announcement made on Wednesday, Akasa Air, India’s newest airline, has confirmed the placement of an order for four additional Boeing 737-8 jets. This follows their previous order for 72 planes, bringing their total inventory to 76 aircraft. Among these are 23 737-8s and 53 high-capacity 737-8-200 planes. The airline stated that this additional order will also enhance its expansion strategy as they aim to commence international operations by the end of 2023.

Vinay Dube, the founder, and CEO of Akasa, highlighted the significance of the airline’s achievement, stating that they have become the first airline in global aviation history to reach a fleet size of 19 aircraft in under a year of operation. Currently, with 19 planes in service, the airline plans to add its 20th aircraft to the fleet in July. Furthermore, Dube mentioned that the company is actively working towards finalizing another substantial aircraft order, expected to be announced before the end of 2023.

Dube emphasized the advantages of the 737-8 aircraft, stating, “In addition to supporting our rapid domestic expansion, these airplanes allow us to take full advantage of the category-leading 737-8 aircraft with its unparalleled range, as we prepare for our foray into international routes.” Akasa aims to commence international operations by the close of 2023 and anticipates having a total of 72 planes by March 2027.

While discussions with the government regarding potential destinations are still ongoing, industry reports suggest that Akasa is considering Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan destinations, among others.

Akasa’s announcement at the Paris Air Show marks the third significant headline made by Indian airline companies in quick succession. Also, IndiGo made a colossal order of 500 Airbus planes on June 19, followed by Air India’s announcement the next day finalizing their deal with Airbus and Boeing for 470 aircraft. Air India’s deal, initially announced in February, had been the largest ever in terms of the number of planes ordered until IndiGo’s recent order surpassed it.
