Bangalore Airport Records 96% Surge in Passenger Traffic to 31.91 Million in FY23

According to the private airport operator, passenger traffic at Bangalore airport surged by 96% to 31.91 million in FY2022-23 from the previous year’s 16.28 million. BIAL disclosed that domestic traffic grew by 85.2% to 28.12 million in FY23 compared to 15.18 million in FY22, while international traffic increased more than three-fold to 3.78 million from 1.10 million in the year ending March 2022.

Furthermore, Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIAB / BLR Airport) stated that it had achieved significant growth in passenger numbers and remained a market leader in handling perishable cargo.

The resumption of operations following the pandemic, the reintroduction of crucial routes, as well as the launch of new routes that link top business hubs and tourist destinations have attributed to the remarkable rise in passenger volumes during FY23.

BIAL has connected the Bangalore Airport to a total of 100 destinations, consisting of 75 destinations across India and 25 international destinations, which has contributed to a steady recovery. In the year 2022-23, Akasa launched its services from the airport, Qantas introduced its service to Sydney, and Emirates launched daily Airbus A380 services to Dubai from the airport, as stated by BIAL.

BIAL’s Chief Strategy and Development Officer, Satyaki Raghunath, stated that the recent launch of Terminal 2 (T2) has better equipped the airport than ever before to maintain its standing as the preferred gateway to South and Central India.

According to BIAL, the recovery in air transport movements (ATMs) resulted in an overall growth of 50.8% in the previous fiscal year, with domestic ATMs growing 49.8% year-on-year, and international growth standing at 59.6%.

On February 26 of this year, the airport set a record for the highest number of passengers in the fiscal year 2022-23, with 114,299 passengers. BIAL stated that the highest number of passengers was recorded on a single day since the airport’s opening in 2008.

BIAL has announced that several major international airlines have resumed their operations from Bengaluru during the fiscal year.

In addition, BIAL has proudly maintained its status as India’s top airport for handling perishable cargo for three consecutive years. The airport has handled an impressive 44,143 MT of perishable cargo in the current year until January 2023, with full-year results still pending. Furthermore, during FY22, the airport processed 52,366 MT of perishable cargo, according to the airport operator.
