Best of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Drive Transformation at Air India, Affirms N. Chandrasekaran

NEW DELHI, August 11, 2023 – Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran announced on Thursday that Air India, under the guidance of the Tata Group, will harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to revolutionize its operations. Chandrasekaran emphasized that Air India is more than just a business venture for the group; it is a passion and a national mission. The chairman made his remarks during an event in the capital city, where Air India unveiled its new brand identity and aircraft livery.

Since assuming control of the struggling national carrier in January of the previous year, Tata Group has been leading Air India’s transformation. Chandrasekaran acknowledged that while he often receives constructive criticism about the airline, it only strengthens the group’s commitment to revitalizing Air India.

Speaking at the event, Chandrasekaran highlighted the ongoing effort to upgrade all human resource aspects within the airline. He recognized the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the clear path set for the airline’s revival. He also stressed that AI and ML technologies will play a pivotal role in this endeavor.

“We are dedicated to enhancing all human resource facets of the airline. Our fleet requires extensive attention. Despite having placed one of the largest fleet orders, this process will require time. Meanwhile, we need to enhance our existing fleet to meet acceptable standards. Our vision is to incorporate the finest AI and ML technologies in Air India, surpassing those of any other airline,” Chandrasekaran remarked.

As both the Chairman of Tata Group and Air India, Chandrasekaran celebrated the unveiling of Air India’s new logo, which symbolizes boundless potential, progressiveness, confidence, and more. He underlined that Air India is not merely a business venture but rather a passion and a crucial national mission for the group.

“Our dedication to Air India extends beyond a mere business venture. It represents a passion and a monumental national mission. Over the past 15 months, we have undertaken a journey to shape Air India into a world-class airline, characterized by modernity, safety, cutting-edge technology, exceptional customer service, and the distinguished experience for which it had gained renown,” Chandrasekaran declared.

Tata Group officially assumed control of Air India in January 2022, marking a significant milestone in the history of the airline. Chandrasekaran shared that he receives numerous emails daily, ranging from criticism to compliments. However, even in criticism, he detects genuine concern and a desire for improvement. He affirmed that such feedback only strengthens the group’s determination to bring about positive change.

Air India, originally founded by Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (JRD) Tata in 1932 as Tata Airlines, holds a storied history. In 1946, the airline re-launched its aviation division as Air India, and in 1948, it initiated flights to Europe under the banner of Air India International. The airline’s international service was among India’s initial public-private partnerships, with the government holding 49%, Tata retaining 25%, and the public owning the remaining shares. In 1953, the government nationalized the airline, and in 2022, the Tata Group reclaimed ownership of Air India from the government.

As Air India embarks on this transformative journey with the Tata Group’s support, the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies promises to redefine its operational landscape, reestablish its reputation, and propel the airline towards new horizons.
