Chennai Airport’s New Terminal Building: A Symbol of Modernization and Progress Inaugurated by PM Modi
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chennai International Airport’s New Integrated Terminal Building (Phase-1), which cost Rs 1,260 crore. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to enhance passenger handling and improve the overall airport experience. Notably, the NITB has been uniquely designed to exhibit the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.
According to the government, the addition of the Chennai airport’s new integrated terminal building will increase. The airport’s capacity to serve passengers from 23 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) to 30 MPPA. The design of the new terminal incorporates various traditional elements that showcase Tamil culture, such as Kolam, sarees, and temples, while also highlighting the natural surroundings. The government has ensured that each aspect of the building’s design has been meticulously planned and executed.
According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the columns in the building have been designed to resemble palm trees, while the ceilings are adorned with motif lights that reflect the Kolam (Rangoli) patterns of South India. Additionally, the roof design of the building has been inspired by the traditional dance form of the state Bharatnatyam.
The NITB’s wavy roofing has been specifically designed to replicate the pleated costume that beautifully fans out during the dancer’s movements in Bharatnatyam. The event was graced by the presence of Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M Scindia. And, also Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, and Chief Minister M K Stalin, among others.
While touring the terminal, the PM was observed sharing some friendly moments with Stalin. The CM accompanied them and showed his approval by patting the PM’s hand while they both exchanged smiles.
