CSMIA Reports a Significant 23% Surge in Passenger Traffic at Mumbai Airport in May

Mumbai, June 19, 2023: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), owned by the Adani Group, has reported a remarkable 23% year-on-year surge in passenger footfall for the month of May. The airport witnessed a surge in domestic and international passenger numbers, indicating a strong rebound in air travel. This positive trend can be attributed to the airport’s robust connectivity and infrastructure, which have played a significant role in attracting travelers.

CSMIA

According to the data released by the private airport operator, CSMIA handled a total of 43,43,806 passengers in May 2023, with 2,109,607 arrivals and 2,234,199 departures. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 35 lakh passengers recorded in May last year. Moreover, when compared to the previous month of April 2023, which saw 40,14,823 passengers, the airport experienced an 8% growth in passenger numbers, highlighting its consistent upward trajectory.

Pre-Covid levels

The recovery at CSMIA has been impressive, with the airport surpassing pre-Covid levels by more than 100% in both domestic and international sectors. This achievement is also a testament to the efforts made by the airport management and the resilience of the aviation industry as a whole.

In terms of air traffic movements (ATMs), CSMIA handled 26,054 ATMs in May 2023 alone, reflecting a significant increase in flight operations. One notable day was May 27, when the airport witnessed substantial passenger movement numbers, totaling 1,51,356 passengers, including 76,037 arrivals and 75,319 departures.

Delving deeper into the statistics, the airport saw a high volume of domestic travelers from various destinations. Delhi contributed the highest number of passengers, with 2,77,911 arrivals and 2,76,192 departures. This was followed by Bengaluru and Chennai, indicating the demand for travel between major Indian cities.

On the international front, Dubai emerged as the most popular destination, with 1,00,581 arrivals and 1,13,859 departures. The city experienced a remarkable influx of travelers, closely following Abu Dhabi and Singapore, which signifies the resumption of international travel and the growing confidence of passengers in flying abroad.

CSMIA’s achievement of a significant surge in passenger traffic is a promising sign for the aviation industry’s recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airport’s focus on providing a safe and efficient travel experience, combined with its extensive connectivity and state-of-the-art facilities, has undoubtedly contributed to its success in attracting travelers. Therefore, as air travel gradually returns to pre-pandemic levels, CSMIA is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s growing aviation needs and facilitating seamless travel for passengers across the globe.
