DGCA Data Reveals Decrease in Average Domestic Airfares across Multiple Routes
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted a recent analysis of data revealing a significant decline in the average prices of air tickets on various domestic routes, including the popular Delhi-Mumbai route. This development comes as a relief to travelers who have experienced a sharp surge in airfares, particularly following the suspension of operations by Go First.
The DGCA’s Tariff Monitoring Unit compiled data from 10 different routes, shedding light on the current state of airfares. The findings indicate that on June 29, the average airfares on the Delhi-Mumbai route decreased by a significant 74 percent compared to June 6.

Further analysis of the data reveals a 70 percent drop in average fares on the Delhi-Pune route during the same period, along with a 72 percent decline on the Delhi-Ahmedabad route. Additionally, the average airfare on the Delhi-Srinagar route witnessed a decrease of 36 percent.
Despite these positive trends, ticket prices on certain routes experienced an upward trajectory during the comparative period. Specifically, the average fares on the Mumbai-Delhi and Pune-Delhi routes increased by 23 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
The surge in airfares earlier this month prompted Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to intervene. Minister Scindia urged airline representatives to exercise self-regulation by ensuring reasonable pricing and implementing mechanisms to monitor ticket prices effectively.
It is important to note that airfares in the country are not subject to regulation and primarily depend on the supply-demand dynamics prevailing in the market. Minister Scindia took action by announcing a reduction of up to 60 percent in fares on certain routes and expressed optimism about the possibility of further declines.
The DGCA continues to closely monitor the situation, actively gathering data and evaluating market trends. This comprehensive oversight aims to ensure that airfares remain reasonable and accessible to passengers, while simultaneously allowing airlines to maintain a sustainable business environment.
