DGCA Initiates Investigation after Three IndiGo Aircraft Experience Tail Strikes

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken action against crew members and IndiGo Airlines following three tail strike incidents in the past three months. According to a senior DGCA official, IndiGo aircraft experienced three tail strikes in the last three months.

One incident occurred on February 2, while the other two occurred on April 14. The official added that corrective measures have been ordered based on the findings of the investigation into these incidents.

The crew members involved in the incident have been taken off the flight roster and received corrective training in accordance with the investigation’s findings, according to an official. The airline has also revoked its approval for supervised take-offs and landings, based on the circumstances of the case.

The official confirmed that the aircraft involved in the incident was cleared for release after undergoing maintenance procedures as required by the approved protocol.

In addition, the airline has taken steps to improve awareness of tail strikes during take-offs, landings, and go-arounds. According to the official, a communication has been sent to all pilots. And, the Training Department has instructed trainers to discuss the issue with their trainees.

The official suggested that pilots in command should receive more manual flying training in simulators, and First Officers should also be included in this training. The airline plans to distribute the case study to all pilots, according to the official.

However, the airline reported only two tail strike incidents this year. The first occurred in January at Kolkata airport, while the second took place on April 14 at Nagpur airport.

On April 14, Indigo flight 6E-203 from Mumbai experienced a tail strike during landing at Nagpur airport. IndiGo confirmed that no injuries were sustained, and the aircraft was grounded at Nagpur airport for assessment and repairs. The airline is conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.

A tail strike occurs when the tail or empennage of an aircraft hits the ground or a stationary object during take-off or landing.
