DGCA Reports 15% Growth in India’s Domestic Air Passenger Traffic to 132.67 Lakh in May

India’s domestic air passenger traffic witnessed a significant growth of 15 percent in May 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The total number of passengers soared to 132.67 lahks, a substantial increase from 114.67 lakh passengers in May 2022.

Among the airlines, low-cost carrier IndiGo emerged as the frontrunner, capturing a larger market share of 61.4 percent in May, up from 57.5 percent the previous month. IndiGo transported 81.10 lakh passengers during this period, consolidating its position as the leading airline in the country.

However, May also saw the grounding of Go First, a city-based carrier. Go First has been undergoing insolvency proceedings at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and has not operated any flights since May 3. This has likely contributed to the increased market share for other airlines.

Three Airlines by Tata Group

The three airlines owned by the Tata Group, namely Air India, AirAsia India, and Vistara, experienced sequential growth in their market shares in May 2023. Air India accounted for 9.4 percent of the total traffic, followed by AirAsia India with 7.9 percent and Vistara with 9 percent. The passenger count for Air India and Vistara stood at 12.44 lakh and 11.95 lahks, respectively, while AirAsia India carried 10.41 lakh passengers.

These three Tata Group airlines collectively accounted for 34.8 lakh passengers, representing 26.3 percent of the total domestic air passenger traffic in May 2023.

Another noteworthy development was the rise in market share for Akasa Air, which launched its services in August 2022. Akasa Air’s market share increased to 4.8 percent in May, up from 4 percent in April 2023. Furthermore, Akasa Air achieved an impressive on-time performance of 92.6 percent, the highest among all domestic carriers operating from the four key metro airports in May.

The growth in domestic air passenger traffic indicates a gradual recovery for the Indian aviation industry after the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the relaxation of travel restrictions and increased vaccination rates, more passengers are regaining confidence in air travel, leading to higher demand and increased airline market shares.

The DGCA’s latest data provides a positive outlook for the industry and suggests that the aviation sector in India is steadily moving towards pre-pandemic levels. As the country continues to prioritize the vaccination drive and implement safety protocols, the aviation industry is likely to witness further growth in the coming months.
