Digi Yatra: The Paperless Check-in, Boarding Service Rolling Out at Four More Airports Next Month
Digi Yatra is a revolutionary paperless check-in and boarding service that is making air travel easier and more convenient for passengers. The service, which was launched in December last year, allows passengers to check-in and board their flights by simply scanning their face at the airport. This eliminates the need for traditional paper tickets and boarding passes. The service is currently available at three airports including Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi.
Now, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced that the service will be extended to four more airports – Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada and Hyderabad – from next month. This move is aimed at making air travel more convenient and efficient. The airports authority of India has awarded the work for the implementation of the biometric boarding system at these airports.
The Digi Yatra service is an innovative initiative established by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, utilizing facial recognition technology (FRT) for a seamless biometric boarding system. Its primary purpose is to provide passengers with an effortless and stress-free journey by removing the need for verifying tickets and IDs at multiple checkpoints and improving overall throughput. No one’s personally identifiable information (PII) is stored centrally, as all data is encrypted and stored in the wallet of the passenger’s smartphone, only to be shared temporarily with the airport of origin and deleted within 24 hours of the flight.
The expenditure for this project is provided by the airport operators, with Dataevolve Solutions supplying the FRT-based Digi Yatra central ecosystem service, chosen through a Niti Aayog startup challenge under the Atal Innovation Mission. The Digi Yatra app is available on both the Android and iOS platform, and can be downloaded on any smartphone with Google Play Store or App Store.
