Empowering Women in Aviation: 15 Percent of Pilots in India are female
An official release on Thursday stated that India has a significantly higher percentage of women pilots. This is almost three times the global average of 5 percent, with 15 percent of pilots being women.
Despite this, the government currently does not have any specific program in place to encourage pilot training for women and marginalized groups such as SCs/STs.
Additionally, various air operators in the country currently employ 67 foreign pilots, as indicated by the release.
A press release has reported that Indian scheduled airlines have recruited a total of 244 pilots in 2021. Industry estimates suggest that the country may need around 1,000 pilots per year over the next five years. The press release noted that the annual requirement of commercial pilots depends on factors. Such as the financial health of an airline, airline expansion plans, and growth in the aviation sector.
The press release also mentioned that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reported approximately 10,000 pilots, including 67 foreign nationals, employed by various domestic airlines in India. Furthermore, the release stated that 35 DGCA-approved Flight Training Organisations (FTOs) are operating at 53 bases in the country.
This trend is a result of a concerted effort to empower women in the aviation industry and to encourage more women to consider a career as a pilot. The introduction of various initiatives aimed at promoting gender diversity and equality in the industry has been one of the major factors contributing to this shift.
Moreover, there has been a growing awareness and recognition of the important role that women can play in aviation. Women pilots bring unique perspectives and experiences to the industry and can help to promote diversity and inclusion in a traditionally male-dominated field.
There is still much work to further empower women in aviation, despite these encouraging developments. Many women still face barriers to entry into the industry. There is a need for more programs and initiatives that support their career development.
However, the determination and resilience of women in the aviation industry are a testament to the progress that has been made so far. By continuing to support and empower women pilots, we can create a more diverse. And inclusive aviation industry that benefits everyone.
