Flight Operations Disrupted in Mumbai as Cyclone Biparjoy Causes Chaos at the Airport

Yesterday, flight operations in Mumbai were disrupted by Cyclone Biparjoy. The city experienced heavy rain and gusty winds as the cyclone intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and moved toward Gujarat. The adverse weather conditions in the evening resulted in the disruption of several flights.

Flight Operations Disrupted in Mumbai

Passengers faced various inconveniences, including flight cancellations, delays, and diversions caused by bad weather. Numerous anxious passengers took to social media platforms, particularly Twitter, to express their dissatisfaction and complain about the situation.

Air India issued a statement acknowledging the challenges caused by the inclement weather conditions and the temporary closure of Runway 09/27 at the Mumbai airport. The airline mentioned that these factors, along with other consequential circumstances beyond their control, led to delays and cancellations of some of their flights. Air India expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to their guests and assured them that they were making every effort to minimize disruptions.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, recently announced adjustments to its scheduled flights. In response to a passenger, IndiGo tweeted, “We understand the frustration caused by flight delays. Only in situations beyond our control do we find it necessary to make changes to the schedule. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects Cyclone Biparjoy to strengthen into an extremely severe cyclonic storm. It is projected to make landfall in Gujarat and Pakistan on June 14, accompanied by winds reaching a speed of 135 Kilometre per hour. The IMD’s early Monday morning tweet stated, “Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast: Orange Message. ESCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today over Aeast central & adjoining NE Arabian Sea near lat 19.2N & long 67.7E, about 380km SSW of Devbhumi Dwarka. To cross near Jakhau Port, Gujarat by noon of June 15.”

Furthermore, the IMD predicts that there will be light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh, and Morbi districts of Saurashtra and Kutch on Wednesday.

Additionally, the weather office has issued a ‘thunderstorm’ alert for certain districts in coastal Maharashtra.
