Go Air Pilots Offered Additional Rs 1 Lakh per Month to Retain Talent
Go Airlines India Ltd., which recently filed for insolvency on May 2, has announced plans to raise the salaries of its pilots in an effort to salvage its operations. The airline intends to offer an additional Rs 1,00,000 ($1,211) per month to captains and Rs 50,000 to first officers. This move, referred to as a retention allowance, is aimed at retaining experienced pilots and ensuring the smooth functioning of the airline. The new salaries will come into effect on June 1, according to an email sent to pilots, and will also be extended to those who have left the company but are willing to withdraw their resignations by June 15. In addition to the retention allowance, Go Air also plans to reintroduce a “longevity bonus” for its long-serving staff.

At present, the average monthly salary for Go Air captains is around Rs 5,30,000, as reported by AmbitionBox. In comparison, SpiceJet Ltd. offers captains an average monthly salary of Rs 7,50,000, having increased wages twice in recent months. The revised salary structure at Go Air is also an attempt to bridge the gap and make their compensation more competitive in the industry.
The aviation industry in India, like many others worldwide, is grappling with a shortage of staff as the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to this challenge, India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, has set a target to hire 5,000 workers in fiscal year 2024. Similarly, Air India Ltd. plans to recruit over 4,200 cabin crew members and 900 pilots this year.
Go Air’s revival plan is currently under scrutiny by India’s aviation regulator, which has given the airline a deadline of 30 days to submit a detailed plan, including information about the number of pilots it has. The airline expressed optimism in the email to its pilots, stating, “If things shape up as per the present progress plan, it won’t take long before we will be flying again, which will also enable us to be regular on salary payments.” However, a representative for Go Airlines India Ltd. declined to comment on the matter.
Furthermore, the move to increase pilot salaries is a strategic step by Go Air to attract and retain talent amidst challenging circumstances. By offering a competitive compensation package, the airline aims to ensure the availability of experienced pilots and expedite its return to full operations.
