Goa’s iconic Mopa Airport starts operation
The Mopa airport is a welcome addition to the aviation industry in Goa and is expected to improve connectivity to the region and boost tourism, as well as economic activity in the state. The airport has been built with modern amenities and infrastructure and is a tribute to the late Manohar Parrikar who served as four-time Goa Chief Minister and former Defence Minister. The airport commenced operations with an Indigo flight from Hyderabad to Goa, and Delhi to Mopa airport, making it the 76th domestic and 102nd overall destination in the 6E network.
The airport was welcomed with a musical band playing Konkani melodies and is expected to cater to around 4.4 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with the potential to expand to 33 MPPA. It features a solar power plant, green buildings, LED lights on the runway, rainwater harvesting, and a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant with recycling facilities.
The commencement of operations at the Mopa airport is expected to create numerous business opportunities in the region and will bolster the tourism and economic activity of Goa. It also provides an alternate option to tourists who wish to visit Goa, apart from the existing Dabolim airport. The airport will be providing direct connectivity to the rest of the country and abroad, and will be beneficial to the people of Goa in various ways.
