India and EU sign agreements for collaboration in aviation safety and air traffic control

On Thursday, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) signed an MoU to cooperate in aviation safety during the EU-India Aviation Summit. Additionally, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) signed a declaration of intent with Eurocontrol, a pan-European organization focused on supporting European aviation, specifically in the area of air traffic control.

The DGCA and EASA MoU aims to promote collaboration at the regulatory and safety levels. While the AAI and Eurocontrol declaration of intent is focused on air traffic control. During the summit, India’s Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, emphasized the historical relationship between India and the EU, inviting industry players from the EU to participate in India’s rapidly growing aviation market.

In his virtual address at the two-day summit, Scindia spoke about the strong historical relations between India and the EU that continue to thrive today due to robust physical, digital, and people-to-people connectivity, aided by the aviation industry. He couldn’t attend the event in person as he had tested positive for Covid.

The summit was also addressed virtually by Adina Vălean, European Union Commissioner for Transport, who spoke about the natural partnership between India and the EU. In areas ranging from commercial opportunities to aviation safety and security, sustainability, air traffic management, and consumer protection. She expressed her hope that aviation would become one of the most successful partnerships between the two regions, given their shared experiences and objectives and their successful history of partnership and cooperation in many areas.

At the summit, both the EU and India will focus on air transport relations and the opportunities and challenges they share. These include the recovery of air traffic after Covid, increasing sustainability, maintaining safety, and developing unmanned aircraft systems.

Top-level policymakers, industry executives, and stakeholders from both the EU and India will come together at the summit.

Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Sweden, Andreas Carlson, expressed confidence in the future of the bilateral relationship between India and the EU, stating that they have a long-standing history and an even brighter future of cooperation and collaboration.
