Indian Aviation Market Boasts Profitable Opportunities for All Players: Emirates
Emirates, a leading Gulf carrier, has stated that the Indian aviation market is sufficiently vast to allow all players to thrive profitably, and the airline remains committed to pursuing its strategies regardless of its competitors’ actions. Despite Air India’s recent expansion of its fleet and operations, Emirates, which exclusively utilizes wide-body A380s and B777s, maintains its operations in nine Indian cities, with a total of 167 weekly flights to the country.
An Emirates executive, who holds a senior position, expressed their belief that the expansion of Air India could have a favorable impact on the aviation and travel industries, Indian customers, and all other airlines by compelling airports to enhance their services. The executive also mentioned that Emirates may benefit from Air India’s commencement of new international routes. This is because the launch of a new route by an airline could generate a surge in traffic demand that the airline might not be able to satisfy entirely.

During a recent conversation with PTI, Mohammed Sarhan, Vice President of India & Nepal for Emirates, stated that if their carrier is unable to meet the needs of potential customers, they may consider looking at other options. However, this could have a positive impact, as it could encourage Emirates to improve its services and offerings. Meanwhile, the Tata Group is expanding Air India’s operations and has placed orders for a whopping 470 new aircraft, including 70 wide-body planes.
In response to a question about Air India and its competition in the Indian market, Sarhan commented that although there is competition, its focus is on its own strategies. He emphasized that the market is sizeable enough to accommodate all players and ensure profitability, regardless of what their competitors do.
Emirates is optimistic about the Indian market and desires additional bilateral agreements to expand its flight operations. Sarhan, a spokesperson for the airline, noted that a Boeing 777 can transport up to 20 tonnes of cargo in its belly hold, whereas an Airbus A380 has a cargo capacity of 15 tonnes.
According to the spokesperson, flights departing from India typically have their cargo holds fully occupied. In addition, the airline has designated cargo planes capable of carrying up to 100 tonnes, which are scheduled to fly to Ahmedabad and Mumbai in response to the seasonal surge in cargo demand. The airline also operates A380 aircraft on routes to Mumbai and Bengaluru in the Gulf region.
Emirates is currently operating with 263 aircraft in its fleet and serving over 140 destinations globally. Recently, the airline initiated a retrofit scheme for 120 of its existing A380 and B777 planes, which they project will conclude by 2025.
