IndiGo 500-Jet Order Makes a Grand Entrance at Airbus’ Paris Debut
IndiGo, one of India’s leading airlines, is set to make a grand entrance at the Paris Air Show as it finalizes negotiations with Airbus SE for a record-breaking indigo 500-jet order. The proposed agreement, which would double IndiGo’s existing backlog, primarily focuses on A320neo family aircraft. Sources familiar with the negotiations have revealed that IndiGo and Airbus are preparing to announce the deal on the first day of the prestigious event.
While officials from Airbus, IndiGo, and Flynas (a Saudi carrier in talks with Airbus) have declined to comment on the matter, insiders suggest that the negotiations for both transactions are ongoing. The deal with Flynas for a large narrowbody order could also become a significant highlight of the Paris Air Show. However, it is important to note that the final numbers and outcomes of these negotiations may still be subject to change.
Airbus Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Faury expressed his enthusiasm for the Paris Air Show, stating that it would signify the industry’s return to a period of excitement reminiscent of the past. Prior to the event, Airbus had already secured deals for 60 A320 family aircraft and 10 A350s from undisclosed customers, indicating a promising start to what promises to be a bustling few days of new orders.
Flynas- Low-cost airline in the Middle East
Flynas, which aims to become the leading low-cost airline in the Middle East, has expressed its intention to expand its fleet to 250 aircraft, up from its current fleet size of about 50 Airbus A320s. IndiGo, on the other hand, already possesses a backlog of approximately 500 planes resulting from previous agreements, including a 300-plane order in 2019. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that IndiGo was close to finalizing a record-breaking deal with Airbus.
Additionally, IndiGo is in the process of considering a separate purchase of widebody aircraft, with both Airbus and Boeing vying for the opportunity to supply approximately 25 aircraft. While negotiations for this deal are still ongoing, sources suggest that Boeing may have an advantage in securing the agreement with its 787 Dreamliner. However, the situation remains fluid and subject to change.
If IndiGo’s purchase agreement with Airbus materializes, it would surpass Air India’s recent order for 470 aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. This significant investment by India’s former flag carrier reflects the country’s position as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally. IndiGo currently dominates the domestic flying sector in India, accounting for nearly 60% of the market.
As the aviation industry emerges from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Paris Air Show serves as an opportune platform for major announcements and deals. IndiGo’s potential order of 500 aircraft from Airbus, along with the anticipated agreement with Flynas, contributes to the excitement and optimism surrounding the event. With the evolving dynamics in the Indian aviation market, these orders signify a strong commitment to future growth and expansion.
