IndiGo Collaborates on Codeshare Connectivity to US and Canada

On Sunday, IndiGo announced that it is exploring the possibility of codeshare connectivity to the US and Canada in collaboration with Turkish Airlines. Additionally, the airline has received approval from the civil aviation ministry to wet lease up to two planes for flights to the United States and Canada, according to a senior official who spoke to PTI on Friday.

IndiGo responded to inquiries regarding its future plans by stating that it continuously assesses and discusses potential ventures with aircraft manufacturers. However, the airline emphasized that any talks regarding this matter are mere conjecture at this time. Instead, IndiGo’s current aim is to facilitate codeshare connectivity to the United States and Canada via its partnership with Turkish Airlines. The necessary application and approval process is currently underway, as per the statement.

When airlines engage in codesharing, they can facilitate the booking of their passengers on partner carriers and offer them uninterrupted travel to locations where they lack a physical presence. Air India’s strategies align with this practice, as they begin to intensify their global operations and increase their fleet size through new aircraft acquisitions.

In February, IndiGo commenced its operations on the Delhi-Istanbul route with the Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft. The budget carrier obtained a wide-body plane through a wet lease agreement with Turkish Airlines and marking its first venture into operating it. With a wet lease, aircraft are leased together with the necessary operating crew and engineers. This type of arrangement is typically used to address supply limitations and prevent airfare spikes and is generally restricted to shorter time frames.

Reports suggest that the airline is considering making substantial orders for new aircraft. Presently, the airline boasts a fleet of over 300 planes, with approximately 500 more aircraft on order.

IndiGo, which holds the largest share of India’s domestic airline market and runs approximately 1,800 flights every day, is prioritizing the expansion of its international operations and planning to add more foreign destinations to its routes. Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, revealed in an interview with PTI in February that the airline has consistently considered the possibility of incorporating wide-body aircraft into its fleet, but refrained from disclosing any precise information.

According to the spokesperson, IndiGo remains open to all possibilities and has not excluded any options. With nearly 500 aircraft on order and a constant flow of deliveries, the company’s main priority is fulfilling these commitments. Additionally, the recent XLRs order will extend IndiGo’s operational capabilities, reflecting the company’s continued focus on growth and expansion.
