IndiGo Expands Foreign Operations with 6 New Direct Flights to Africa and Central Asia

In an announcement made on Friday, IndiGo, the prominent airline in India, revealed its ambitious plan for significant international growth. As part of this expansive strategy, the airline will commence direct flights to six new destinations across Africa and Central Asia.

In late July or early August, IndiGo will launch direct flight connections between Mumbai and Nairobi, Kenya, as well as Jakarta, Indonesia. Additionally, In August, Delhi will connect with Tbilisi, Georgia, and Baku, Azerbaijan, followed by a connection to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Almaty, Kazakhstan, in September. A company statement outlined these developments.

In response to the increasing demand for international travel from, to, and via India, the airline InterGlobe Aviation, operating as IndiGo, is introducing 174 additional weekly international flights between June and September 2023. These new flights will encompass fresh destinations, routes, and frequencies.

Once the new routes become operational, IndiGo will connect a total of 32 international destinations, an increase from the current 26 destinations.

Furthermore, in August, IndiGo will recommence daily services from Delhi to Hong Kong, which had been suspended for three years due to the impact of Covid-19.

Pieter Elbers, the CEO, expressed enthusiasm for these developments, stating, “The inclusion of these exciting new destinations, direct flight routes, increased flight frequencies, and strategic codeshare partnerships will facilitate the expansion of our network across four continents, including our penetration into Africa and Central Asia for the first time. With this network expansion, we will directly serve 32 international destinations (up from 26), in addition to our existing 78 domestic destinations.”

IndiGo’s expansion is taking place during a time of significant growth in overseas travel demand from India, with air travel rebounding since the pandemic. However, the airline will face stiff competition from Air India, which is undergoing a transition and ramping up its international expansion plans, evident in its large aircraft orders.

In addition, IndiGo is enhancing its connectivity to Europe by establishing codeshare connections with Turkish Airlines. Through this partnership, passengers can access 33 European destinations via Istanbul.

A press release stated that IndiGo will soon provide connectivity to North America as part of the codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines, pending final regulatory approvals.

With a robust domestic market share exceeding 57 percent, IndiGo operates a fleet of over 300 planes and runs more than 1,800 daily flights.
