Furthermore, Scindia highlighted the operationalization of Salem airport in Tamil Nadu and the upcoming launch of Vellore airport in the next few months. He also noted that Tamil Nadu will establish a total of 14 UDAN routes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building at Chennai airport, costing Rs 1,260 crore, and shortly after that, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia made the announcement.

Scindia went on to state that under the UDAN Yojana, 1.20 crore people who never thought of traveling by air have already benefitted.

The Union government launched the UDAN scheme to provide air connectivity in Tier-II and -III cities. The scheme aimed to improve accessibility and promote economic growth in these regions.

Under the leadership of Modi, the new integrated building at the airport serves as a “testament” to a new era of civil aviation, according to Scindia. He stated that civil aviation in the country has experienced significant growth, with the number of passengers more than doubling from six crores before 2014 to 14.5 crore per year across India in the past nine years.

Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Scindia noted that the air passenger throughput had reached pre-pandemic levels, with 4.55 lakh passengers currently traveling in a day, compared to 4.20 lakh passengers previously.

Scindia emphasized that the country had only 74 operational airports in the 65 years since Independence. However, the government has since constructed an additional 74 new airports, heliports, and water domes, bringing the total to 148.

“He said that the Prime Minister is strongly focused on India’s progress and development. In the next four to five years, we plan to construct over 200 airports, water domes, and heliports,” Scindia stated.

Scindia also mentioned Air India’s disinvestment, which had placed the most substantial order in the history of international civil aviation. “As a result, the times are changing, and Chennai is emerging as one of the country’s most significant gateways. With 43 domestic and 24 international connections, it is India’s third-largest airport,” he stated.

He also revealed that the airport’s international terminal would accommodate around 3 crore passengers, up from the previous 2.3 crores. Also said, “Chennai airport will expand from 3 crores to 3.50 crore passengers in the next two years in the second stage of growth.”

He stated that the newly constructed terminal utilizes 60% renewable energy and offers multi-modal connectivity, including a direct link to the Chennai metro.

He emphasized that each airport serves as a gateway to India and should showcase the country’s diverse cultural heritage. In keeping with this idea, the new integrated terminal proudly displays 13 paintings of Tamil Nadu’s most significant temples.
