Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved the prestigious Platinum rating in the Airports Council International (ACI)’s Green Airports Recognition (GAR) program 2023, in the category of under 8 million passengers per year. The ACI-Asia-Pacific awarded MIA this rating, acknowledging the airport’s unwavering dedication and achievements in implementing green sustainability initiatives, according to a statement released by MIA.

This rating recognizes MIA’s ongoing commitment to becoming one of the pioneering airports in eliminating the use of single-use plastic (SUP). During the 18th ACI Asia-Pacific regional assembly, conference, and exhibition held in Kobe, Japan, they presented the award.
The GAR program 2023 focuses on eliminating SUP (single-use plastic) pollution globally, particularly within the aviation industry.
To achieve a “SUP-free airport,” the MIA (airport’s name) conducted a thorough assessment of single-use plastic sources within the airport, which included business partners, employees, stakeholders, and passengers. As a result, the airport implemented guidelines for all restaurants to use wooden cutlery instead of single-use plastic. In food and beverage outlets, plastic cups and straws were replaced with glass and paper alternatives.
Cloth bags replaced duty-free bags at international departures and arrivals, and paper bags replaced single-use plastic bags at all retail outlets. Additionally, within the office, the use of single-use plastic drinking water bottles has been completely eliminated, and glass bottles are now used instead.
The SUP-free airport campaign has showcased awareness videos on digital display boards and flight information display systems across multiple locations.
Furthermore, vendors have received guidelines to send spare parts, products, and consumables without SUP wrappers. Through this initiative, MIA has successfully decreased plastic waste from an average of 1,238 kg per month in FY 22 to an average of 444 kg per month in FY 23, thereby reducing 23.8 tonnes of CO2.
Furthermore, the SUP-free airport project has strengthened the airport’s commitment to achieving Net Zero goals.
