Noida Airport Expansion Enters Phase 3: Impact Assessment Targeted for Completion by August 30

Officials have announced that the Uttar Pradesh government has released a notification stating their intention to conduct a ‘social impact assessment’ (SIA) for the acquisition of an additional 2,053 hectares of land for the upcoming Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar. The SIA will be carried out by Gautam Buddh University and is expected to be completed by August 30, as stated by Arun Vir Singh, the CEO of Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL). The acquisition involves a total of 1,888 hectares of land from 14 villages in the Jewar tehsil of Gautam Buddh Nagar.

Singh, who serves as the CEO of both NIAL and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), confirmed the issuance of the land acquisition notification for the third phase expansion of the airport. The authorities have already acquired the land required for the first phase, which spans 1,365 hectares, as well as the second phase, which covers 1,334 hectares.

“The development plan for the airport envisions the construction of three runways during the third phase, in addition to the three runways planned for the first and second phases,” explained the IAS officer.

Currently, the construction team is currently undertaking the first phase of the airport and expects to complete it by September 2024, which will enable the commencement of commercial operations.

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPAL), a subsidiary fully owned by the Swiss company Zurich Airport International AG, is also spearheading the development of this public-private Greenfield airport, located approximately 75 km away from Delhi.

The acquisition of land for the third phase will proceed with the consent of the landowners, in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (UP) Rules, 2016, as stated in the official notification.

A total of 1,888.90 hectares out of the planned 2,053 hectares for acquisition will impact the villages of Thora, Neemka Shahjahanpur, Khwajapur, Ramner, Kishorpur, Banwaribans, Parohi, Mukimpur Shiwara, Jewar Bangar, Sabauta Mustafabad, Ahmadpur Chauroli, Dayanatpur, Bankapur, and Rohi, as indicated in the notification.

According to the publication made under the order of Governor Anandiben Patel, the forthcoming industrial infrastructure development will foster employment opportunities, boost manufacturing and exports, and enhance the growth of tourism by facilitating air traffic.

The Noida International Airport (NIA) is currently undergoing development and is projected to become the largest airport in India once all four phases are completed.

By the mid-2040s, the airport will cover an expansive area of approximately 5,000 hectares. It will feature multiple runways, and two terminal buildings, and have the capacity to serve 120 million passengers annually.

Additionally, the airport will house dedicated facilities for cargo operations and provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, as confirmed by officials.

Upon its completion, the NIA will serve as the third commercial airport in the National Capital Region, following the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi and the Hindon air base in Ghaziabad.
