Karachi – Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to resume direct flights to the United Kingdom (UK). This comes after a scheduled audit by the UK’s Department for Transport to evaluate Pakistan’s aviation standards.
The audit is a key step toward lifting the 2020 ban on PIA, enabling the airline to return to major international markets.
Pakistan Airlines to Resume UK Flights
A seven-member team from the UK’s Department for Transport arrived in Pakistan on January 27, 2025, to begin an audit of the nation’s aviation framework.

The evaluation, scheduled to continue until February 6, will focus on key areas like licensing, aircraft airworthiness, flight standards, and overall aviation safety.
Nadir Shafi Dar, the Director General of Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), expressed confidence in the country’s readiness for the assessment.
“We are ready to provide a comprehensive overview of the audit process,” he remarked. Extensive arrangements have been made to facilitate the audit, with PCAA staff working on a weekend to ensure seamless operations.
The outcome of this inspection could pave the way for the reinstatement of direct PIA flights to the UK, a crucial link for the airline and its passengers.
The ban, originally imposed due to safety concerns, has significantly affected PIA’s operations and revenue.
PIA Strategy for Global Market
In December 2024, the European Union lifted its ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), enabling PIA to resume flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).

This development is a positive step, as the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) often follows decisions made by the EU.
PIA plans to restart flights from Islamabad and Lahore to major UK cities, including London Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN), and Birmingham (BHX).
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the financial and strategic importance of these routes. He noted that they play a key role in helping PIA recover revenue and prepare for privatization.
There’s also hope that successful audits and resumed UK flights could pave the way for PIA to restart operations to the United States.
Implications for Pakistan’s Aviation Industry

Restoring direct flights to the UK would be a major milestone for Pakistan’s aviation sector. It would not only improve PIA’s financial condition but also enhance Pakistan’s standing with global aviation authorities.
Improved international connectivity boosts the economy, increases tourism, and strengthens bilateral relations.
With audit results likely to arrive by March or April 2025, PIA could not only unlock new opportunities but also become a stronger competitor in the global aviation industry. Furthermore, this milestone could potentially position the airline for greater success while also enhancing its reputation worldwide.
