Scindia Unveils Plan for 121 Carbon Neutral Airports in India by 2025

During his virtual speech at the two-day EU-India aviation summit, Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that 100% green energy is being used in 25 airports across the country, and an additional 121 airports will become carbon neutral by 2025. Scindia has unveils the plan and was unable to attend the event in person after testing positive for Covid.

The aviation industry’s emission contribution has been under intense scrutiny, and Scindia stated that several measures have been taken to minimize carbon footprints and mitigate emissions. He emphasized that India and the European Union share a common goal of addressing climate change.

The minister stated that airports should aim to use 100% renewable energy by 2024 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. Currently, 25 AAI airports have already reached this goal, and the government aims to make an additional 121 airports carbon-neutral by 2025.

The use of renewable energy is now a requirement in the bidding process for new airports, the minister added. In addition, efforts are being made to encourage the use of sustainable aviation fuel. This is also with Indian airline operators having already conducted bio-fuel blended flights.

Scindia also extended an invitation to EU players to collaborate with India in developing adaptive technologies to address emissions from the aviation industry.

Beginning on Thursday, the summit will concentrate on EU-India air transport relationships. And, the challenges and prospects shared by the two regions. These include post-Covid air traffic recovery, increased sustainability, safety maintenance, and unmanned aircraft systems development.

The summit will unite senior policymakers, industry executives, and stakeholders from both the EU and India.

Therefore, the aviation minister highlighted India’s efforts to encourage aircraft manufacturing through regulatory reforms. He stated that the regulatory environment had been revised to make it as conducive as possible for MROs. GST rates on MRO services were lowered from 18% to 5%, and 100% Foreign Direct Investment was allowed into the sector. New MRO guidelines were also introduced to rationalize the charges levied on MRO service providers for ease of doing business.

The minister urged EU industry players to take advantage of these opportunities and become part of the world’s fastest-growing aviation market.
