SpiceJet Under Increased Scrutiny After DGCA Orders Enhanced Surveillance
SpiceJet, one of India’s leading budget airlines, is currently under increased scrutiny as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered enhanced surveillance on the carrier. This development comes at a time when SpiceJet is facing multiple financial challenges, although the airline has refuted any claims regarding the heightened surveillance.
According to a senior official, the DGCA has been monitoring SpiceJet more closely for over three weeks now, and this process is ongoing. The enhanced surveillance measures include intensified night surveillance and spot checks. The primary objective is to ensure that the airline’s financial difficulties do not compromise flight operations or compromise safety standards. The DGCA also wants to ensure that SpiceJet does not cut corners in terms of safety obligations.
Spicejet and DGCA
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official mentioned that the purpose of this enhanced surveillance is to verify whether SpiceJet is fulfilling its safety obligations or not. The DGCA wants to guarantee that the airline adheres to all safety protocols and regulations.
However, SpiceJet has denied receiving any communication from the DGCA regarding the enhanced surveillance. In a statement, a spokesperson for the airline strongly refuted the information and stated that it is absolutely incorrect.
In recent months, SpiceJet has been dealing with several challenges, including the repossession of aircraft by various lessors. However, the airline has managed to settle some of these cases. On June 21, SpiceJet announced that it had reached a settlement agreement with Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC), one of its lessors for Q400 planes.
The aviation industry has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and many airlines have faced financial difficulties as a result. SpiceJet’s situation is not unique in this regard, as several carriers have struggled to navigate the challenging operating environment.
It remains to be seen how SpiceJet will address the financial headwinds it is currently facing and respond to the DGCA’s enhanced surveillance. The airline will likely need to demonstrate its commitment to safety and compliance with regulations to regain the confidence of both passengers and regulatory authorities.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders, including passengers and investors, will closely monitor SpiceJet’s actions and the DGCA’s continued oversight to ensure that the airline maintains high safety standards and resolves its financial issues effectively.
