Expressing optimism about Air India’s revival, Panagiotoulias highlighted the airline’s strong commitment to its mission and extensive business transformation efforts. In an interview, he emphasized that India is a critical market for growth, offering diverse opportunities for the aviation industry.

Panagiotoulias also acknowledged the steps taken by the Air India group to strengthen its operations, such as the significant aircraft order placed earlier this year and the expansion of services. Additionally, he noted that India’s aviation market is one of the fastest-growing globally, displaying a robust recovery in domestic air travel after the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts are also underway to establish an international hub in the country.

Post-pandemic, Panagiotoulias observed varying speeds of global recovery, with North America and Europe rebounding more quickly than the Asia Pacific region. Regarding premium travel, he confirmed an increase in leisure premium travel, driven by individuals seeking elevated experiences. However, corporate premium travel has not witnessed the same level of resurgence.

When asked about expanding the alliance’s membership, Panagiotoulias stated that the current 26 members provide comprehensive global coverage. He brings over 25 years of international experience in the airline and aviation industry to his role as CEO of Star Alliance, having recently joined Hawaiian Airlines.

Established in 1997 by five airlines from different regions, Star Alliance currently boasts 26 member carriers. These airlines converge at over 50 global hubs, facilitating seamless connections through a world-leading global network. A management company, headquartered in Frankfurt and Singapore, oversees the coordination of the alliance’s projects and activities. These include airport co-location, digital infrastructure, frequent flyer integration, and joint business lounge initiatives, as detailed on the alliance’s website.
