Strict Measures Urged Against Unruly Passengers by Airlines

Several incidents of unruly behavior by passengers on flights have prompted the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to direct airlines to take strict action against such fliers. The DGCA has also advised the airlines to ensure that their pilots and cabin crew members are well-versed with the regulations pertaining to such incidents.

People have reported instances of passengers smoking and drinking inside the aircraft, attempting to open emergency exits, and engaging in altercations with either the crew or co-passengers. In a recent case, a passenger on an Air India flight from Delhi to London caused physical harm to two cabin crew members, resulting in his arrest by the police.

To curb such unruly behavior, the DGCA has urged the airlines to implement stringent measures and create awareness among passengers regarding the consequences of such actions.

The DGCA has become aware of several incidents of smoking on aircraft, as well as the consumption of alcohol leading to unruly behavior, disputes between passengers, and inappropriate physical contact or sexual harassment by passengers. In some cases, pilots and cabin crew have failed to take the necessary steps. Such occurrences, according to the DGCA, have the potential to jeopardize the safety of aircraft operations.

The regulatory body has urged all airlines’ heads of operations to ensure that their pilots and cabin crew are trained to detect such passengers and to take appropriate action to maintain aircraft safety. The DGCA has requested that airlines take precautions to avoid any adverse impact on passenger safety.

However, IATA and IFALPA emphasized that the industry needs a coordinated and consistent approach to effectively tackle the problem and ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Passengers who engage in unruly behavior not only pose a risk to themselves and others but also disrupt the operation of flights and can result in significant financial costs for airlines.

Therefore, as air travel continues to increase, airlines and governments must work together to address this growing problem and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
