Uncertainty Persists Over Jet Airways’ Flying Permit

Uncertainty looms over the revival of Jet Airways as its air operator’s certificate (AOC) expired on Friday, raising concerns about the airline’s flying permit. The Jalan Kalrock Consortium (JKC), the winning bidder for Jet Airways during the insolvency resolution proceedings, has remained silent on the status of the AOC.

Jet Airways has been grounded since April 18, 2019, and its AOC was revalidated on May 20, 2022, for a one-year period, which ended on the aforementioned Friday. It is unclear whether the consortium has sought any relaxation or renewal of the AOC from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is a crucial requirement for operating an airline.

Attempts to reach Ankit Jalan, a board member of the JKC, for clarification on the renewal of the AOC have gone unanswered, further deepening the uncertainty surrounding Jet Airways’ flying permit.

Moreover, the ownership transfer of Jet Airways to the JKC is yet to take place, as disagreements persist with the airline’s lenders. The process of resolving the airline’s debts began in June 2019, and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the JKC’s resolution plan in June 2021.

In a recent development, the Consortium reportedly approached the NCLT, seeking more time to pay creditors and implement the revival plan. The request for an extension highlights the challenges and complexities involved in the revival of Jet Airways, further adding to the prevailing uncertainty.

Jet Airways, once a prominent player in the Indian aviation industry with 25 years of operations, succumbed to financial difficulties and was forced to halt its services. Since then, passengers, employees, and industry stakeholders have been eagerly anticipating its revival. However, the prolonged delays, unanswered queries, and the expiry of the AOC have raised concerns about the future of the airline.

The revival of Jet Airways is not only significant for its stakeholders but also for the overall aviation sector in India. The airline’s return would contribute to increased competition, provide more options for passengers, and create job opportunities in the industry.

As the situation unfolds, industry experts, aviation enthusiasts, and stakeholders will closely monitor the developments surrounding the airline. The resolution of outstanding issues, including the renewal of the AOC and the successful implementation of the revival plan, will be crucial in determining the airline’s fate and its ability to return to the skies once again.
