Unruly Passenger Assaults 2 Crew Members, Forces Air India’s London Flight Return to Delhi

Air India’s flight from Delhi to London returned to the national capital on Monday after the crew removed an unruly passenger.

The Delhi Police detained Jaskeerat Singh, a 25-year-old man, for his disorderly conduct during the flight. Mr. Singh was traveling to London with his parents and is a resident of Kapurthala, Punjab. Air India has filed an official complaint, and legal action will be taken against the passenger, as confirmed by the Delhi Police.

Air India's Unruly Passenger

According to an airline statement, a passenger’s serious unruly behavior shortly after departure forced Air India flight AI 111 to return to Delhi.

Despite verbal and written warnings, the passenger continued to display disorderly conduct, including causing physical harm to two cabin crew members.

Security personnel took custody of the passenger upon landing. The flight, which had approximately 225 passengers, had to return to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) due to the male passenger’s disruptive behavior.

The airline reported that they deboarded the disruptive passenger upon landing, and the flight subsequently departed for London Heathrow.

Various instances of disruptive passengers onboard both domestic and international flights have occurred in recent times.

Another Incident

One such incident involved a 30-year-old passenger from Kanpur who was traveling on an Indigo flight from Delhi to Bengaluru. A police official apprehended the intoxicated passenger for attempting to open the emergency exit mid-air and stated that the passenger “tried to create trouble for others seated in the plane and attempted to open the flap of the emergency exit.”

In recent times, there has been an increase in incidents of unruly passenger behavior on board flights worldwide. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported a 50% increase in such incidents in 2021 compared to the previous year.

The IATA has called on governments worldwide to take a more coordinated approach to deal with such incidents and has also urged airlines to implement stronger measures to prevent such behavior.

In the wake of the incident, Air India has announced that it will be reviewing its procedures and protocols to ensure the safety of its crew and passengers.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting crew members and adhering to the rules and regulations put in place for the safety of everyone on board a flight. The aviation industry must work together to address this growing problem and ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future.
