Vistara and Air India to Combine, Creating Full-Service Carrier: Campbell Wilson
Chief Campbell Wilson of Air India announced on Monday that they will rename the full-service carrier following the merger with Vistara to Air India. He stated that this was due to Air India being more widely recognized outside of India, as the group strives to become a major international aviation player. He also mentioned that they will make efforts to preserve some of the “Vistara heritage” within the newly formed airline, even though it will be known as Air India.
The Tata Group has worked hard since January last year to turn around Air India, announcing the merger of Vistara airline into Air India. And, the integration of AIX Connect (formerly known as AirAsia India) into Air India Express. Their aim is to have one full-service airline and one low-cost airline within the group. As stated by Wilson, the full-service airline will be a combination of Air India and Vistara.
Vistara and Air India
The CEO and MD of Air India expressed a desire to bring the legacies of both Air India and Vistara together. They plan to combine the recognition Vistara has within the Indian market with Air India’s 90-year history to create a new full-service carrier called Air India. Wilson stated that they will preserve and honor some of the Vistara heritage in the new Air India.
Wilson on Monday shared that the merger of Vistara and Air India is in the process of receiving approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Furthermore, he stated that two companies, along with external parties, are exploring potential opportunities for integrated business and focusing on matters during the integration process.
On November 29, the Tata Group announced a major deal to combine Vistara with Air India. Singapore Airlines will also obtain a 25.1 percent share in Air India, making it the country’s largest international carrier and second-largest domestic carrier. They expect to finalize the agreement by March 2024, provided that we obtain the necessary regulatory approvals.
Currently, Tata Group holds a majority 51% stake in Vistara, while Singapore Airlines holds the remaining portion. The Air India chief expressed a strong desire to keep the beloved Maharaja brand alive. They believe it is an important part of their future, and that it is a symbol of their heritage and beloved by many. They commit to making sure the Maharaja brand remains an integral part of Air India’s future.
He noted that Air India has vast potential, which could open up a world of opportunities for ambitious professionals to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
