Vistara Flies Boeing 787 on Sustainable Aviation Fuel, A Step Towards a Greener Future

Vistara, a full-service carrier, announced on Thursday that it flew a Boeing 787 aircraft on the Delhi-Mumbai route, utilizing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). According to the airline’s statement, this marks the first time an Indian carrier has flown a domestic commercial flight on a wide-body aircraft, blending 17% SAF with 83% conventional jet fuel.

The use of SAF during the Delhi-Mumbai flight resulted in a reduction of approximately 10,000 pounds of CO2 emissions, as stated by the airline. Vistara expressed its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and also contributing to a sustainable future for the aviation industry through this pioneering initiative.

Vistara, the joint venture of Tata GroupSingapore Airlines, recently made history as the first Indian airline to operate a wide-body aircraft on a long-haul international route using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The flight, which took place last month, used a blend of 30% SAF and 70% conventional jet fuel on a ferry from Charleston International Airport, South Carolina to Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. This resulted in the reduction of approximately 150,000 pounds of CO2 emissions over the fuel’s life cycle, according to Vistara.

Vinod Kannan, Chief Executive Officer at Vistara, expressed his enthusiasm for the airline’s latest industry-first initiative. “We have always been committed to driving sustainability and innovation in aviation, and are delighted to carry out yet another industry-first initiative of operating a commercial flight on a wide-body using SAF,” he said. Also, the airline is currently in the process of merging with Tata Group-owned Air India.

The TATA Group’s portfolio includes Air India, Air India Express, and AIX Connect (AirAsia India), a low-cost airline. Plans to merge AIX Connect and Air India Express into a single budget carrier are underway.

Furthermore, Vistara stated that it and other TATA Group airlines have been working tirelessly to reduce carbon emissions by utilizing sustainable technologies.
